BIOGRAPHY

José Ayerve was born in Bogotá, Colombia. He grew up in Western Massachusetts, became a Maine resident in 1992, and currently resides in Portland.

Ayerve began studying music at the age of nine. He transitioned from piano to guitar at 13, and became a multiinstrumentalist by the time he reached college in 1992. Ayerve has performed with innumerable bands throughout his career. His main pursuit since 1995 has been and continues to be the schizophrenic, indie-pop group, SPOUSE.

As a solo artist, Ayerve has released Cinco Pesos - a collection of six Spanish-language compositions that meld his indie stylings with latin and garage elements. He is currently recording over 20 songs in preparation for a forthcoming sophmore release.

Each of Ayerve's experiences in the studio has helped develop his engineering style and production approach. He has engineered a number of recordings for various artists (Lo Fine, New Radiant Storm King, Mike Flood) as well as some of his own projects (SPOUSE, BullyClub).

Whether performing with a band or on his own Ayerve has shared the bill with: Bob Mould, Mark Mulcahy, Folk Implosion, Magnetic Fields, Pernice Brothers, Willie Nelson, and Lois, amoung many others.

Currently, Ayerve keeps himself busy recording the third SPOUSE record, and handling some of the responsibilities for Pigeon Records the umbrella label started by Dan Pollard (of SPOUSE) and Ayerve as a channel for releasing and distributing recordings by associated bands from Northampton, Massachusetts and Portland, Maine.
